The Prolonged Humanitarian Crisis in Eastern DRC

For over three decades, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has been engulfed in one of the world’s most devastating and overlooked humanitarian crises. This article explores the scale and dynamics of displacement—now affecting more than 7 million people—and sheds light on the dire conditions in IDP camps, the systematic use of sexual violence as a weapon of war, and the immense challenges faced by NGOs on the frontlines. Drawing on data from 2012 to 2025, it examines how conflict, weak governance, natural disasters, and foreign interference converge to perpetuate suffering.

The report concludes with urgent recommendations: from strengthening accountability for sexual violence, to regulating the mineral trade, protecting IDPs, and investing in governance reforms. Beyond documenting tragedy, it seeks to highlight pathways toward justice, dignity, and long-term peace for millions of Congolese caught in this protracted crisis.
